What cities have the most mosquitoes?
Mosquito activity is highest in areas with warm temperatures, humidity, and standing water where mosquitoes can breed. To identify the worst mosquito cities, Terminix has identified the top 50 mosquito-infested cities across the United States. The list of these cities was compiled using service data from over 300 of our branches located throughout the country, based on where residents used the highest number of mosquito control services in 2025 in our designated market areas.1
The top five cities where mosquitoes are most common are New York, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. New York City claimed the top spot due to exceptionally warm and wet weather. While Los Angeles, Dallas, and Atlanta consistently rank high because of their long, warm seasons, New York’s spike in humidity and rainfall has propelled it to the number one position.

What types of mosquitoes and diseases are common in cities?
In the United States, two mosquito groups are responsible for most activity in urban areas: Aedes and Culex. Both adapt well to city environments where small water sources, such as gutters, containers, and storm drains, create ideal breeding spots. Aedes mosquitoes are usually active during the daytime and often breed in small amounts of standing water around homes. Culex mosquitoes tend to be more active in the evening and overnight and are commonly found near larger water sources.
Both types are known carriers of mosquito-borne diseases. In the U.S., the most commonly reported illnesses include West Nile virus, dengue, Zika virus, and chikungunya.2 According to the CDC, West Nile virus is the leading mosquito‑borne disease in the continental U.S., with about 2,000 diagnosed cases each year—though the actual number of infections is likely higher because many people have mild or no symptoms.
What are the top mosquito-infested states?
If you’ve ever wondered what state has the worst mosquitoes, it often comes down to climate, rainfall, and breeding conditions. Texas, California, and Florida remain repeat offenders, while Pennsylvania and Kentucky make their first appearance in the top five this year.1 Warmer-than-usual springs, wetter summers, and expanding urban and suburban breeding grounds have created ideal conditions for mosquito populations to surge. What states have the least mosquitoes?
